Most homeowners are under the impression that the majority of burglaries occur at night because the darkness provides much-needed cover for the criminals. In fact, nighttime burglaries are why most home security system companies recommend that you install motion-activated security lighting around your property. The common perception is that if a burglar is exposed by light, he won’t break in.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In fact, some research indicates that the majority of burglaries actually occur during the day. The reasons for this are that there is a better chance that the homeowner won’t be home and many of the neighbors are gone as well. If no one is around to watch the house, the burglar basically has free reign when it comes to breaking in.
Most burglars do not want to run into homeowners when they break in. They don’t want to harm anybody and they don’t want to run the risk of the homeowners overtaking them and summoning the police. For that reason, they will watch your home for a period of days to determine when your house will be vacant. Then they will strike.
Fortunately, there are some measures you can take to make sure your home is not a target for burglars who operate in the daytime. First and foremost, install a home security system as soon as you can. With the monitoring services that come with these systems, your house is never left unprotected. Someone is keeping an eye on your house at all times of the day or night. As soon as the alarm is triggered, the monitoring company will send out emergency personnel to your home, hopefully either scaring the criminal away or catching him in the act.
Second, get to know the neighbors that are home during the day. One of the cheapest and best forms of home security is a neighborhood watch program. When neighbors get to know each other, they become vested in their safety. Burglars like to strike when most of the neighborhood is at work or school, but there’s always one or two who stay home for large portions of the day. Ask them to keep an eye on your house and tell them you will do the same when they are gone.
Third, do not follow the same routine every day. Because many burglars will case out a target before striking, if you come home unexpectedly during the day, they can’t know for sure that you will not be home if they decide to strike. They will probably decide to hit another house that is more predictable.
